's not going to happen. >> all right, pete williams tonight, thank you. >>> as authorities search for answers, they are turning more of their attention to a trip the older brother made last year to the russian republics of chechnya and dagestan, both mainly muslim, both with militant separatist movements. tonight nbc's adrian mong is in dagestan in the neighborhood where some of the suspect's family lives. >> reporter: a long way from boston in this remote mountainous city in dagestan in the northern caucasus, relatives and friends of the suspected bombers are in shock over the news that two of their own may have been responsible for the marathon bombings. "i don't believe it but only allah knows," says an uncle of the brothers. tamerlan tsarnaev visited him when he traveled to dagestan last year. in the neighborhood where tamerlan and dzhokhar's father lives, the same sentiment. neighbors here on the street tell us they have a hard time believing what happened because they say the suspect's father is a good man. but the neighbors also say they haven't met the sons. dagestan is the russian fe
, pete williams has reported on. and we looked at that carefully, and that's the scene of the blast of the second bomb. so this guy has planted the second bomb. we looked at the dark hat guy as they walk. it's just interesting that the dark hat guy looks a little older, walks in the front. and his bomb detonates first. they don't have a video of him planting the bomb. but the -- special agent in charge said they pieced it together. and what they pieced together was the backpack. i'm sure they pieced together the backpack. it's possible he could have laid his hat on the backpack. so they could have found the hat and the backpack. but they were able from the video to say a backpack looking just like that was there. they probably have video of these guys communicating and talking. that's an interesting report about his reaction. these cowards are probably exhibiting some glee and joy at this, you know, vulgar thing they did. but that's going to be they're undoing as well. >> yeah -- >> they underestimated -- they underestimated law enforcement. and they underestimated the resilience of
'll get to nbc justice correspondent pete williams. as i turn to you, this news conference is going on, we know that officials did conduct two bomb sweeps in the area yesterday, one before the race and then one around the finish line they said about an hour before runners started to cross the finish line. what else can you tell us? >> despite the confusion overnight, they did not find more than two bombs, the two that went off, the confusion comes from the fact that as the bombs went off, people dropped packages they were holding and ran away. when police arrived on scene, they had all of these packages they had to check. they didn't take a lot of time. they simply destroyed them if there were any questions. some confusion last night that there were some unexploded devices. now they say that's not the case. as for revere, an apartment belonging to a student here who was 20 years old from saudi arabia, he was seen running from the scene, authorities say they did not find anything that search to indicate that he had any involvement in the bombing. he's been questioned all night. the interest
. >> lester in boston thank you so much. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams following overnight developments in the investigation. pete, good morning. it seems there is no clearer picture as to who may be behind this. >> i think that's certainly true although there is high hope that they will be able to answer that shortly. they know for certain the attack involved two bombs, but many other packages found on the street were deemed suspicious and destroyed and that took a lot of time last night. there were many packages to check because after the explosions officials say many people simply dropped what they were carrying and ran, leaving their packages behind. there were conflicting accounts whether investigators found two unexploded bombs. this morning a senior law enforcement official says there were no unexploded devices, just the two that went off. several officials say the bombs that went off included shrapnels to multiply the injuries, bebes and ball bearings. investigators are investigating video to see if they can see individuals placing the packages. there is a video fro
. >> bringing in pete williams into the discussion. i want to start with the images, the first one lester showed u. us, the immediate aftermath, from across the street, looking down. you will see a man in black, his clothing has been shredded, running from the scene. are investigators looking at that? this is not the one okay, here is the one we are talking about. our invest gators looking at him running to or away from terror? >> i would say running away. with a window over the finish line, we saw this man. can you see the impact of the blast partially ripped his clothes away. now, the same thing was said about this exchange student. we are not sure -- it could be the exchange student, they are not sure. if any event, the fbi no longer considers him, they think he was just a victim. >> and the mail box, there is a package, a bag at the foot of that mail box, we zoom in on that one. and the immediately aftermath of the explosion. it looks like it took place almost exactly in that spot. what you are hearing from invest gators from this? >> they have other pictures that show the same thing. the q
doing the same sort of rushing to get the information. so who do you trust in this story? pete williams who is doing what? calling people on the phone and talking to sources. again, back to your gumshoe way. >> we are the twitter generation. we are not satisfied just watching events unfold. we are participating in those events. that means that many of us are participating in those events in bad ways. we are profiling innocent bystanders, we're profiling based on the color of their skin, using social media to spread hate and suspicion. eric rush tweeted after the bombing, muslims are evil, let's kill them all. it's been used in this way. but many more people i have seen have found community and unity and expressed a commitment to diversity online. >> i want to take one step back and say, look, the crowd sourcing of this operation was very successful. the big risk when you surface pictures, you will have vigilanteism. we don't underestimate that. largely around the country, they were very responsible on that. on the big things, not the rumors online, but on the big things, i would say a b
